PTO Committee Descriptions
Autumnfest
Oversees a daylong, school-wide carnival held in October that provides the majority of the PTO’s annual budget. There are roughly 20 committees ranging from underwriting to t-shirt sales to concessions, which all require different talents and time/seasonal commitments.
Book Fair PJ Night
Coordinates a night during the SMS book fair in November when families are invited to attend for fun activities and snacks and kids are encouraged to wear their PJ’s.
Catholic Identity
Promotes the spiritual welfare of the children of SMS. The PTO assists with the Spiritual Retreat process for the 5th and 6th grades and offers opportunities to promote our Catholic faith throughout the year.
Catholic Schools Week
Coordinates events of the week including Mass, Vocation Panels, All-school Dinner, Service projects, Outstanding Disciple Awards, etc. Usually held in January or February.
Christmas Market
Coordinates this event held in December which features goods and wares from local business community and SMS vendors.
Christmas Purse Collection
Organizes the drive to collect monetary donations which are divided among all SMS staff. The drive runs in early part of December.
Communications
Coordinates communications from the PTO to the school community through Facebook and our weekly PawPrint newsletter.
Family Outreach
Manages SMS family and school needs on campus, such as memorial masses, babysitting during PTO general meetings and volunteer recruitment for select non-PTO events.
Field Day (Pre-K-5th grade)
Organizes a fun morning of outdoor activities held at the end of May.
Fun(d)raising
Coordinates with local business for Spirit Nights. Businesses typically give back a percentage of sales during that event.
Grandparent’s Day
Coordinates invitations, RSVPs and details of the breakfast and Mass. It is a special day for our SMS senior family members and is held on the last day of Catholic Schools Week.
Hospitality
Organizes the Back-to-School Picnic, Holiday decorating, etc.
PTO Meetings
Plans the food and occasional giveaways, sets up and decorates for monthly meetings.
School Supplies
Works in the Spring/Summer to organize the purchase of school supplies. This committee works with teachers and school to determine needs and paces order. This committee also coordinates delivery to the school and appropriate classrooms in the summer.
Service
Organizes one or more school-wide projects, on or off campus, which serves the charitable needs of our local community.
Spirit Store
Organizes all elements of running the Spirit Store, located in the school cafeteria. Volunteers are in charge not only of acquiring merchandise for sale, but also setting prices, keeping an inventory of items and staffing the store when it is open to the parents and students. Talent Show

Teacher Appreciation and Lunches
Organizes back-to-school and monthly birthday lunches for faculty as well as Teacher Appreciation Week activities.
Used Uniform Sales
Coordinates the used uniform sale at the beginning of the school year. This sale allows parents to donate and/or purchase gently-used school uniforms, as well as some for scout groups, at discount prices. This committee also coordinates storage of items between sales and may sell items to new students as they arrive throughout the school year.
Volunteer Appreciation
Coordinates events honoring the parent volunteers. Coordinates Volunteer of the Month/Year recognition and awards.
